The Russian government has “strongly condemned” the United States’ decision to involve itself in the Israeli-Iranian conflict and called on the international community to “collectively reject” Washington’s decision to bomb three nuclear sites in Iran overnight on Sunday.

“The irresponsible decision to subject the territory of a sovereign state to missile and bomb strikes, no matter what arguments are used, grossly violates international law, the UN Charter, and the resolutions of the UN Security Council,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on Sunday.

The Foreign Ministry noted that while it was too early to judge the consequences of Washington’s actions, “including radiological ones”, it criticised the US for “further undermining regional and global security”.

Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev also commented on the US attacks on Sunday, downplaying their effectiveness while stressing that the “absolute majority” of countries in the world are against the actions of Israel and the United States”.

“Trump, who came to power as a peace-making President, has started a new war for the United States,” he wrote on his Telegram channel.

Although Vladimir Putin has yet to issue an official response to the US strikes on Iran, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told state-owned news agency TASS on Sunday that a conversation with the White House could be arranged “quickly” if need be, though there were currently “no plans” for such contact.

The American airstrikes, launched at approximately 2:30am local time, targeted three of Iran’s most fortified nuclear facilities — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — using B-2 stealth bombers equipped with bunker-buster munitions and long-range cruise missiles.

Confirming the strikes on Truth Social, US President Donald Trump, described the US bombing operation as “very successful”, called on Iran to cease fighting, and vowed that any retaliation by Tehran would be met with “far greater [force] than was witnessed tonight”.

In the aftermath of the attack, the Iranian government requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, while the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency said the country would continue its uranium enrichment program despite the incident.
