Local police have detained two suspects after an attack on the Russian consulate in Marseille, French news broadcaster BFM TV reported on Tuesday.

The suspects were identified via surveillance camera footage, sources told the channel, and were detained on Monday at an event marking the three-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Two explosive devices were thrown at the Russian consulate in the French city at around 8am on Monday, only one of which detonated. BFM TV later said that the explosive devices in question were Molotov cocktails. No one was injured in the explosion.

Marseille police have opened an investigation into vandalism using explosives or flammable substances.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova told state-owned news agency RIA Novosti that more than one explosion had been heard at the consulate on Monday, and that the incident bore “the hallmarks of a terrorist attack” before demanding “an exhaustive and prompt investigation” from the French authorities, and calling for “steps to strengthen the security of Russia’s overseas missions”.

Russia’s Investigative Committee announced on Tuesday that it had opened a case regarding “an assault on an institution enjoying international protection committed with the aim of complicating international relations”.
