Local police have detained a woman in Irkutsk, in Russia’s Far East, after she recorded an “insulting video” criticising the celebration of Russia Day as well as the Russian military, independent news outlet Mediazona reported on Friday.

On Thursday, Maria Makhmutova, a 35-year-old blogger with some 5,000 followers, published an expletive-laden video to her personal Instagram account. In it, she labelled Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine “undignified murderers”, and described Russia Day — celebrated on 12 June to mark the anniversary of Russia’s declaration of sovereignty in 1990 — as a “fucked holiday”.

“Do you guys have anything to be fucking proud of? What the fuck are you proud of? What are you living for, you’re eating your last dick without salt! That you have to kill people to buy cars and fucking apartments?”, she said, adding that if all Russian soldiers fighting in Ukraine “died tomorrow”, she would “drink wine”.

“But they won’t die tomorrow, because that would be too easy. They will suffer the consequences,” she added.

Makhmutova’s video was reposted on the same day by Russian conservative pro-war movement Call of The People, which called her “a woman with a filthy tongue who wishes death on our fighters” and lodged an official complaint with the Prosecutor General’s Office. Shortly thereafter, the video was also picked up by propaganda broadcaster RT.

Footage of Makhmutova’s detention released on Friday by a local branch of Russia’s Interior Ministry shows regional rescue service officers arriving at her apartment and promptly kicking down its door. According to an accompanying police report, Makhmutova could not open the door herself due to a “faulty lock”, while the officers believed she was at risk of “harming herself” and needed to be “rescued”.

In addition, the Interior Ministry says that due to Makhmutova’s “discrediting words about the Russian Armed Forces and negative speech about Russia Day”, the legality of her actions is “currently being assessed”.

On Friday, independent outlet 7x7 reported that Makhmutova had posted a video in which she claimed that she had called the police herself after receiving death threats following her first video’s publication, and attempted to cut her wrists with a kitchen knife. It is not yet known whether the Interior Ministry has opened a criminal case against her.
