NextImg:MSNBC's Capehart Denounces Trump Keeping People 'In Cages'—Ya Mean, Like Obama?

Jonathan Capehart was filled with virtue signaling -- um, we mean righteous indignation! -- as he opened Saturday's edition of MSNBC's The Weekend.

Capehart began his tirade by denouncing Republicans for celebrating passage of the Big Beautiful Bill, claiming it will be:

"Throwing millions of needy families to the wolves, slashing health and food benefits. Those lawmakers will now have to explain all of this to voters back home, many of whom are, to put it bluntly, screwed."

Yikes: people eaten by wolves and screwed! And yet, tens of millions of Americans voted for the legislators who supported the BBB. Maybe they know something that Jonathan doesn't.

Capehart then shifted his outrage to Trump's immigration policies:

"The first immigrant detainees have arrived at the crudely named Alligator Alcatraz, human beings who are being kept in cages."

This is sort of a weird line, because we do put humans in prison who are murders, rapists, child traffickers, arsonists -- the criminals. This is temporary detention. Their aim is for migrants to be detained for a few weeks.

What kind of heartless SOB cochildren in cages during Obama-Biden admin 2014uld detain not just adults, but children, in these pictured conditions, and even defend it, saying he was "proud," adding:

"If they’re good enough for our military, they’re good enough for these young people."

Truly, Trump is the most despicable, callous, cold-hearted villain ever to occupy -- no, wait. That would be Vice President Joe Biden, and these images are from the Obama-Biden administration in 2014. Capehart didn't show these images of "cruelty." He doesn't always seem to hate humans in cages. Never mind!

Note: Capehart's co-host Eugene Daniels piled on to the dystopian image of life under Trump, claiming that Trump is "revoking citizenship for people he just doesn't like."

Inconvenient Facts

  • Far from Trump revoking citizenship of "people he just doesn't like," the Department of Justice has announced that: "Denaturalization proceedings will only be pursued as permitted by law and supported by evidence against individuals who illegally procured or misrepresented facts in the naturalization process."
  • Although the numbers have increased under Trump, "From 1990-2017 [i.e., pre-Trump], the DOJ filed 305 denaturalization cases, and the rise began under the Obama administration, which used improved digital tools to identify potential cases of naturalization fraud from years before."

Capehart concluded the doomsday denunciation of all things Trump/Republican by urging his viewers: "Grab your coffee and settle in."

Coffee? After the apocalyptic vision of the world under Trump that Capehart and Daniels described, distraught MSNBC viewers might be more likely to reach for the hemlock!

Here's the transcript.

MSNBC
The Weekend
7/5/25
7:00 am EDT

JONATHAN CAPEHART: Good morning. It is Saturday, July 5th.

Today, the hangover from the Republicans' unseemly celebration after throwing millions of needy families to the wolves, slashing health and food benefits. Those lawmakers will now have to explain all of this to voters back home, many of whom are, to put it bluntly, screwed.

EUGENE DANIELS: Also, Trump's disturbing increase in political and legal threats, as he now talks openly about revoking citizenship for people he just doesn't like.

CAPEHART: And, the cruelty is not just the point, it's the policy. The first immigrant detainees have arrived at the crudely-named Alligator Alcatraz, human beings who are being kept in cages.

And with a fresh $45 billion in taxpayer money coming from Congress, we'll see soon see how much worse this crackdown is likely to get. Grab your coffee and settle in. Welcome to The Weekend.
