NextImg:Legacy Newscasts Fret Over SCOTUS Ruling Allowing ICE Crackdown

In what has become a predictable and boring exercise, the legacy news media freak out over a Supreme Court action that puts a stop to activist obstruction of President Trump’s agenda. This time, on immigration, with the added bonus of a freakout over the president’s "Chipocalypse Now” meme.

The tone was set early by CBS’s John Dickerson, perhaps trying to get as much off his chest as possible before Kenneth Weinstein gets settled in as ombudsman and/or/if/when Bari Weiss takes charge of the news division:

JOHN DICKERSON: The Supreme Court clears the way for indiscriminate immigration sweeps in Los Angeles, as ICE agents begin a crackdown in the Boston area.

The actual item filed by White House Correspondent Weijia Jiang was far tamer than Dickerson’s tease, but included this appeal to the sanctity of government crime data, an unrebutted sound bite from the governor of Massachusetts, and a reference to the Los Angeles ICE raids as “roving”, a term best suited for the marauding gangs ICE will likely encounter along the way:

WEIJIA JIANG: But a new analysis from the CBS News data team found violent crime in Chicago is currently down 20% compared to the same period last year, which includes a 31% decrease in homicides and 16% decline in aggravated assaults. In Massachusetts, the governor objected to any federal intervention.

MAURA HEALEY: I think a lot of this has to do with political theater and attempts to distract from Trump's failing agenda.

JIANG: Tonight, The White House is responding to that Supreme Court ruling that lifts restrictions on roving ICE raids in Los Angeles, saying it reaffirms that, quote: “lower activist judges are trying to impede the President from lawfully carrying out the People's agenda.”

Unsurprisingly, Jiang’s item included no mention of the many illegal alien child predators detained by ICE in Massachusetts' sanctuary cities, often released back into the public on cashless bail.

ABC compressed their usual hysterics into a World News Tonight brief, with a greater focus on the meme, and with Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas amplifying criticism of the ICE raids as “racial profiling”. Here is their full report as aired on World News Tonight on Monday, September 9th, 2025:

DAVID MUIR: Next this evening, the Supreme Court handing President Trump a major victory in his immigration crackdown, and the president igniting a firestorm by posting an image referencing bringing war to Chicago. Let's get right to our Chief Justice Correspondent Pierre Thomas. Pierre?

PIERRE THOMAS: David, the city of Chicago is bracing for an immigration enforcement surge, after the president posted on social media over the weekend that the city was, quote, “about to find out why it's called the Department of War.” He later downplayed the post, and there's still no word on when the National Guard might be deployed in Chicago. But today, Homeland Security officials announced “Operation Midway Blitz” has been launched, which they say will target the worst of the worst foreign nationals accused of crimes. And today, the administration got more leeway for aggressive immigration enforcement after the Supreme Court lifted restrictions on ICE agents operating in California, whose tactics have been criticized as racial profiling. David.

NBC Nightly News was equally upset about both the meme and the ruling, with White House correspondent Gabe Gutierrez adding in portions of Justice Sonia Sotomayor’s over-the-top dissent and closing out with negative poll numbers:

GABE GUTIERREZ: Today, in a legal victory for the president, a conservative Supreme Court majority loosened restrictions on ICE operations in L.A. But in her dissent, liberal Justice Sonia Sotomayor writing: “we should not have to live in a country where the government can seize anyone who looks Latino, speaks Spanish, and appears to work a low-wage job.” Tonight, The White House insisting it does not target people based on race.

TOM HOMAN: It's a multitude of factors to establish reasonable suspicion. But if an illegal alien- if an illegal alien has an MS-13 tattoo on his head, that is certainly going to be one of the factors that we consider.

GUTIERREZ: Meanwhile, our NBC News poll shows the president’s approval rating at just 43%. 57% disapprove. Tom.

The legacy media thus continue their longstanding tradition of being in implicit support of open-border policy and illegal alien crime, in reflexive opposition to Donald Trump.

JOHN DICKERSON: The Supreme Court today cleared the way for the Trump crackdown on illegal immigration in Los Angeles. The justices lifted a lower court order that had barred agents from stopping people solely on the basis of race, language, or job location.

MAURICE DuBOIS: Immigration enforcement operations are also planned in Boston and Chicago. We'll get more on this now from Weijia Jiang.

WEIJIA JIANG: The Department of Homeland Security says "Operation Patriot 2.0" in Boston and "Operation Midway Blitz" in Chicago will target, quote: "the worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens." We spoke to Border Czar Tom Homan. 

How does this change the operation on the ground?

TOM HOMAN: National Guard are always on the table, right? But right now it's a surge of law enforcement officers. And look- the president was clear on that two months ago. He said he's going to prioritize enforcement in sanctuary cities.

JIANG: Local leaders in The Windy City are pushing back. 

COMMUNITY ORGANIZER: This was never about arresting the worst of the worst. It's been about terrorizing our communities. But we will not be intimidated.

JIANG: Today, Trump questioned why Chicago is not asking the federal government for more help to combat crime.

DONALD TRUMP: I don't know why Chicago isn't calling us saying "Please, give us help" when you have, over just a short period of time, 50 murders and hundreds of people shot, and then you have a governor that stands up and says how crime is just fine.

TOM LLAMAS: Also tonight, ICE operations are ramping up in Chicago, just as the Trump administration gets a big victory from the Supreme Court allowing immigration stops in Los Angeles. Gabe Gutierrez has the late details.

GABE GUTIERREZ: Tonight the Trump administration stepping up its crackdown on illegal immigration in Chicago, seen here arresting a man from Mexico ICE says was wanted for aggravated sexual assault of a child.

DONALD TRUMP: You try to reason with people like in Chicago with the governor or the mayor. You try and reason with them and it's like you're talking to a wall.

GUTIERREZ: Over the weekend, President Trump posting an AI-generated image of himself with the phrase “Chipocalypse Now.” The caption: “I love the smell of deportations in the morning.” The president saying he is still considering sending the National Guard there to reduce crime.

TRUMP: We’d love to go to Chicago and straighten it out. (VIDEO SWIPE) We are bringing back law and order to our country.

GUTIERREZ: Over the last two weekends, there have been 14 homicides and at least 76 people shot in Chicago. With one alderman telling us National Guard troops would free up police.

UNNAMED CHICAGO ALDERMAN: I absolutely support the Trump administration bringing in more federal resources. Our city needs as much help as we could possibly get.

GUTIERREZ: But Chicago's Democratic mayor is increasingly pushing back. Writing that the city “just experienced record low homicide numbers making this the safest summer since the 1960s.”

PROTESTER: Our communities remain united more than ever against the administration's attempt to unleash the military, National Guard and rogue ICE agents on our city and state.
