Along comes the hard-left Guardian US to save the day with an article by Adrienne Matei entitled "From Nazi Germany to Trump’s America: why strongmen rely on women at home."
It's a l-o-n-g and rambling piece, but one thing can be said in its favor: it doesn't lack a sense of humor.
Thus, a "cultural historian" is quoted as saying:
“There’s been a reluctance to name this moment as fascism.”
Right! So much reluctance that Googling "Trump fascism" yields only 20.4 million results in 0.33 seconds.
Hitler's propagandist Joseph Goebbels makes an appearance before long, and sure enough, Trump's "pro-natalist" policies are similar! The author is upset that at a pro-life rally, JD Vance said "I want more babies in the United States of America."
Frightening! Sure, our birth rate is at a record low, way below the replacement level. Unless a future Democrat administration throws the borders open again, [as per AI] "The U.S. population is projected to begin shrinking in the early 2030s. This would lead to an aging population, a smaller labor force, and increased dependency on entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare, impacting economic growth."
The author claims that by restricting abortion, the Trump administration is seeking to ensure relatively more white births. The opposite is true. The abortion rate among black women is about four times higher than among white women. And while black women make up only about 13% of the female population, they account for 40% of the abortions. Limiting abortions would thus increase the proportion of black children who are born.
The author condemns the "womansphere." Although the article was published almost two weeks after Charlie Kirk's assassination, it doesn't mention that fact. But the author does accuse Charlie and Turning Point USA of "platforming" the womansphere's values by holding "a yearly women’s summit where marriage, procreation and homemaking were key topics." Scary stuff!
The author claims:
"Fascism may betray women, but it still relies on their support. 'What fascisms old and new have in common is they tend to look to women to fill in the gaps that the state misses,' says historian Diana Garvin."
And in another laugh line, the author warns that, as in Mussolini's Italy, "Similar efforts may be required in the US as Donald Trump guts what remains of a paltry social safety net."
So paltry! In FY 2024 [per AI] "the United States spent approximately $1.048 trillion on federal welfare programs, according to Federal Safety Net." And that gargantuan figure doesn't include any of the countless state and local welfare programs.
The article concludes with this mind-boggling bit of condescension [emphasis added]:
"Women who become obedient domestic caretakers may be willfully, even happily, bearing the mantle. They may believe they see a fundamental truth in assuming dependence as the price of security, trusting that patriarchy will protect them so long as they keep its house spotless and bake its bread with a smile. Yet many do not reckon with the influence of hypocritical propaganda on their choices – or with the consequences of accommodating a tyranny that could turn on them."
Yes, in the view of the elitist author, American women are just too dim to realize that they are falling for Trump's fascist trap!
Note: As you see, the image chosen for the article was of a couple rejoicing over their newborn twins. Horrifying! The image doesn't display the women's ankles, but they were presumably chained to the stove.
