NextImg:Get a Grip: Todd Claims Trump Admin Has Turned CBS Into 'State TV'

Former anchor of NBC’s Meet the Press, Chuck Todd, recorded his Monday podcast from Crazy Town as he alleged that the FCC’s role in the Paramount-Skydance merger now means CBS is “state TV” because one of the conditions was that the Paramount property would hire a bias monitor.

Todd angrily began, “This gets me at the word ‘bias,' right? It is a word that people love to throw around, and they don't frickin' know the definition of it. Let me tell you something about bias. Let me check my pulse. Okay, I'm a human being. You know what that means? I'm born with original bias. We all are born with original bias.”

Sure, but it is the job of reporters to try to suppress that bias and, if they can’t, for their superiors to rein it in.

However, Todd continued mourning, “So, when you—this Brendan Carr at the FCC, who has now decided to just blow up the First Amendment, and has made CBS state TV. The restrictions that have been put on CBS now make it state television. Okay, more restrictions than we've ever seen an American government put on the media, arguably since World War II and with government and Hollywood in cahoots to do pro-war propaganda movies. And you can say in hindsight that was done for a good cause, but it was propaganda.”

While one can be hopeful, there is no evidence that a bias monitor would change CBS’s coverage in any way. NPR currently has something similar and, despite its claims to the contrary, is still very much on the left. But just the idea of someone exercising oversight is enough to get Todd all riled up.

Todd then claimed that if there is to be a biased monitor, then the only way to be truly neutral is to promote communism and fascism alongside conservatism and liberalism:

And now, we have an FCC that is doing this. So, Brendan Carr, who's a right-wing conservative. Nothing wrong with that. I think the FCC should have a balance. And right now the Republicans won the election, so yes, I get it, they get the chair. But he wants a bias monitor. Well, biased through whose prism? Is CBS, is he gonna look out to make sure CBS does a percentage of programming that's communist, a percentage of programming that's fascist, a percentage of programming that's MAGA, a percentage of programming that's progressive, a percentage of programming that is quote ‘centrist,’ that is not, who's, what are his qualifications?

Nobody is saying CBS should be forced to promote radical ideologies—although it seems to have no problem in letting the Iranian regime dictate its reporting— but it should not change its tune on certain things just to contradict President Trump or take the left’s unpopular side in the culture wars.

Todd then contradicted himself. Earlier he said everyone has a bias because that is just part of being human. Now, he lamented, “You know, whenever I've been accused of bias, it's usually by a partisan.”

Why does that matter? Either it is a legitimate accusation of bias or it isn’t. If Todd or CBS can’t differentiate between the two, then the media has bigger problems than Brendan Carr.
