CBS’s The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! are the only two late night comedy shows with original episodes this week. As such, both men were the only ones able to give their thoughts on the recent ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. While both hosts acknowledged their eternal nemesis, President Donald Trump, should get credit for the deal, they ridiculed any idea of him winning a Nobel Peace Prize for it given his domestic agenda.
Colbert was up first, and he declared, “But there is some good news out there, because today, thanks to Trump's newly brokered ceasefire in Gaza, all living Israeli hostages and almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners have been released. Okay, it's important. Credit where credit is due: Donald Trump did something good. Are we still canceled? Are you sure? I tried. I tried. It's kind of surprising to see him do something good.”
Moving on to the Peace Prize, Colbert added, “Despite the deal, on Friday, in a truly foreseeable turn of events, Trump did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize.”
A sarcastic Colbert followed up, “How dare you, Nobel Committee? The man is a paragon of peace. He walks in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. After all, who can forget that Nelson Mandela famously declared upon leaving prison: ‘Fat, talentless Rosie O’Donnell should go back to Ireland.’”
Colbert then started to switch to immigration, “After losing his campaign for the thing you don't campaign for, Trump said he didn't do the peace deal for the Nobel, and the White House communications director, Stephen Cheung, agreed, saying, ‘President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian.’”
Taking things very literally, Colbert quipped, “No, he has the heart of a humanitarian. We removed that heart from one of the detainees in our ICE facilities. He keeps it in the Oval Office next to the Diet Coke button. In a little bowl.”
Colbert then switched back to the Middle East with a clip of Trump on Air Force One contemplating the afterlife, “I don't think there's anything going to get me in heaven. Okay?” to which Colbert replied, “I agree with Donald Trump. Still canceled?”
Over on ABC, Kimmel began:
What a day for Donald Trump. You know what? He finally did something positive today, and I want to give him credit for it because I know he's not the type to take credit for himself. Trump was in Israel and Egypt today to celebrate a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas. All 20 Israeli hostages are back home after 738 days. Almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners and detainees have been released. And while we're only in the first phase of what will undoubtedly be a long and tricky process, the fact is the bombing has stopped, the hostages have been released, and Trump deserves some of the praise for that.
Kimmel added, “I know it sounds crazy to say, but, ‘Good work on that one, President Trump.’ Now, maybe you cannot invade Portland. Just an idea. I mean, while you’re on a roll.
Later, Kimmel repeated the evidence-free claim that, “I mentioned last week the Norwegian government. They have one, by the way, the Norwegian government. They were worried about Trump retaliating against them if he didn't win the Nobel Peace Prize. And the woman who did win, Maria Corina Machado, was maybe a little nervous about it too, because she felt the need to call him about it.”
After a clip of Trump, Kimmel turned to the government shutdown, “So, now Trump is focused on winning the prize next year. Which is fine. Let him keep trying to make peace. I'm fine with coming up with prizes and trophies to motivate him. Give him the Nobel to Reopen The Government And Leave Healthcare Alone Prize. “
There’s no evidence Norway is worried about Trump retaliating against them. The only “evidence” is a badly sourced Guardian article that led to similar articles that never quote any Norwegian officials, even anonymously.

STEPHEN COLBERT: But there is some good news out there, because today, thanks to Trump's newly brokered ceasefire in Gaza, all living Israeli hostages and almost 2,000 Palestinian prisoners have been released. Okay, it's important. Credit where credit is due: Donald Trump did something good. Are we still canceled? Are you sure? I tried. I tried. It's kind of surprising to see him do something good.
It reminds me of, you know, in Empire Strikes Back when Darth Vader revealed this shocking secret.
DARTH VADER: Luke, I am an organ donor.
LUKE SKYWALKER: Hooraaaaay!
COLBERT: Despite the deal, on Friday, in a truly foreseeable turn of events, Trump did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
How dare you, Nobel Committee? The man is a paragon of peace. He walks in the footsteps of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King. After all, who can forget that Nelson Mandela famously declared upon leaving prison: "Fat, talentless Rosie O’Donnell should go back to Ireland."
Sounded better with the accent. After losing his campaign for the thing you don't campaign for, Trump said he didn't do the peace deal for the Nobel, and the White House communications director, Stephen Cheung, agreed, saying, "President Trump will continue making peace deals, ending wars, and saving lives. He has the heart of a humanitarian."
No, he has the heart of a humanitarian. We removed that heart from one of the detainees in our ICE facilities. He keeps it in the Oval Office next to the Diet Coke button. In a little bowl.
On his flight to Israel, Trump was asked by Fox News whether the ceasefire he brokered might help him in the afterlife.
DONALD TRUMP: I don't think there's anything going to get me in heaven. Okay?
COLBERT: I agree with Donald Trump. Still canceled?

I mentioned last week the Norwegian government. They have one, by the way, the Norwegian government. They were worried about Trump retaliating against them if he didn't win the Nobel Peace Prize. And the woman who did win, Maria Corina Machado, was maybe a little nervous about it too, because she felt the need to call him about it.
DONALD TRUMP: The person who actually got the Nobel Prize called today—called me and said that I'm accepting this in honor of you, because you really deserved it. A very nice thing to do.
KIMMEL: Yeah, a nice thing for the person who got the Nobel Prize to do today. “I don't know why they gave this to me, it should have gone to you, Mr. President.” So, now Trump is focused on winning the prize next year. Which is fine. Let him keep trying to make peace. I'm fine with coming up with prizes and trophies to motivate him. Give him the Nobel to Reopen The Government And Leave Healthcare Alone Prize.
