Despite wide public revulsion for serial killer and prolific rapist Paul Bernardo, no one alive has been more hurt by him than the families of those who he kidnapped, tortured, and killed more than 30 years ago.

On Tuesday, at Bernardo’s parole hearing, relatives of 14-year-old Leslie Mahaffy, of Burlington, Ont., and 15-year-old Kristen French, of St. Catharines, Ont., struggled to tell the Parole Board of Canada their everlasting horror and why Bernardo should never again walk free among us. Here are the words of Mahaffy’s mother and younger brother, and French’s mother as they wrote them in preparation for their appearances at the hearing.
