Pierre Poilievre rose to prominence as a cabinet minister in the government of former prime minister Stephen Harper and then gained the national spotlight when he ran for the party’s leadership in 2022. But the Conservative leader has been a fixture of Tory politics for decades, as Andrew Lawton, author of the new book, “Pierre Poilievre: A Political Life,” tells the National Post’s Jamie Sarkonak.
“It was an incredibly pivotal time when he was coming up in politics,” says Lawton, referencing the rise of the Reform party in the 1990s and the movement to unite Canada’s fractured conservative political landscape. “His and the party’s story, the movement’s story, are just intertwined.”
Sarkonak and Lawton also discuss the consistency of Poilievre’s views over nearly three decades in politics and how the Albertan came to represent a suburban Ottawa riding, in this NP Comment video.
