On April 23, 2005 — 19 years ago today — the first video dubbed “Me at the Zoo” was uploaded to YouTube. The 19-second video, uploaded by YouTube’s co-founder Jawed Karim (25 years old at the time) has taken on cult-like status. To be fair, those elephants did have long trunks.
The video-hosting social platform now celebrates April 23 as International Creator Day. We spoke with Melissa Maker, a Canadian YouTube star who has amassed a following of 2.12 million subscribers since joining the platform in 2011. Along with her husband Chad, Maker coined their channel Clean My Space after their Toronto-based house cleaning business to help viewers clean their homes efficiently and love their spaces.
