U.S. President Donald Trump has greatly irritated many Canadians with his talk about our country joining the U.S. as its 51st state. His rhetoric is full of tricks, as usual, but his message is clear: he is saying that Canada’s identity is insignificant and easily folds into the American culture. What he’s really saying is that Canada’s history is not any different than that of the United States.
