Canada has an abundance of heroes.

We reminded Canadians about some of them in our Heroes Among Us series, including Private Taumy St-Hilaire, who instinctively ran through Taliban gunfire to lead an Afghan father and son to safety, and then returned to the fight, never again meeting the people whose lives he saved.

He showed heroism in the presence of the enemy via valour in one wild moment in a firefight. We profiled other men who were recognized for sustained leadership from the front over tough months of warfare, even after severe personal injury, such as Maj. David Nelson Quick, who commanded soldiers he had trained back home in both the military strategy and the ethical philosophy of war.
