The birth of Canada can be credited to many factors, but the key one may simply be, to avoid being American. In 1867, that prospect didn’t seem so far-fetched, and the early Americans certainly tried, by war and by suasion.

Canadians came to love Americans, because they’re warm and friendly and open and because we thought they had finally stopped talking about manifest destiny.
