Recently, Ontario’s Progressive Conservative government announced a plan to help provide financial support for newspaper publishers in the province. The best part about it: it doesn’t come at any cost to the taxpayers.

Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy sent letters to several provincial Crown corporations, including the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation and the Liquor Control Board of Ontario. These agencies were directed to allocate one-quarter of their annual advertising budget, which is reportedly over $100 million, to Ontario’s news publishers by Sept. 3.
