The Supreme Court of the United States sent seismic cultural, political, and legal reverberations throughout the world upon overturning its precedent on abortion “rights,” Roe v. Wade, in 2022. Shockwaves have been felt as far north as Canada — and no one seems to love talking about it more than Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

In mid-May, Trudeau criticized the refusal of New Brunswick’s premier, Progressive Conservative Blaine Higgs, to “respect a woman’s right to choose,” referring to a recent regulation that denied public funding for abortion procedures outside of hospitals. The prime minister added that Canadians were “seeing what happened in the United States.” In essence, he maintained that abortion access in Canada is in serious jeopardy because some provinces don’t fund all abortions — even though abortions in Canada aren’t limited by law, and even though the procedure remains largely state-funded.
