The MeToo era was a difficult one for me. Working in the entertainment industry, I personally knew a number of people who had been publicly accused of crimes ranging from sexual harassment and assault, right down to rape.
I had had uncomfortable run-ins with a few of them and found the accusations plausible, and was rethinking my own interactions in this new light. Others seemed far-fetched, but I had no way of determining their veracity. How should I treat those who had been accused, I wondered? Do I believe the accusations and distance myself, or remain friends and support them through the attacks? What if I’m wrong on either count? It was a lot to grapple with, and I didn’t have absolute confidence in their character like I might with a truly close friend. Even then, we never really know the truth of someone’s actions. How else do you explain women who spend years obliviously married to serial killers?
