Although Canada largely appears to have been spared from Donald Trump’s latest round of tariffs, at his press conference on Wednesday, the president aired specific complaints about Canadian trade practices and made it abundantly clear that when it comes to trade, America is only looking out for its own interests.
This is a message that Liberal Leader Mark Carney needs to take to heart, as he steadfastly refuses to pivot from Liberal economic policies that have left Canada uncompetitive and heavily reliant on the American market. Trump’s new tariffs on all countries, ranging from 10 per cent to 34 per cent, don’t include Canada because we were already subject to tariffs. These include 25 per cent tariffs on what the White House calls, “non-USMCA compliant goods,” and 10 per cent tariffs on non-compliant energy and potash.
