There was a time, not so terribly long ago, when U.S. President Donald Trump claimed to be a free speech champion. He promised to reverse the censorial policies of the Biden administration and proclaimed that “government censorship of speech is intolerable in a free society.” But that was before the temperature rose on America’s simmering political strife and the temptation to muzzle enemies proved too enticing to resist. Now Trump wants to emulate presidents of the past and use the excessive regulatory authority of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to silence critics.
