Among the challenges Kamala Harris faces, as she is coronated as the new and allegedly improved Democratic presidential candidate, is that her party is changing. An increasingly assertive left-wing faction of Democrats agitates for positions that are not only alien to many Americans, but are often incompatible with free and open societies. True, the Republican Party went through its own transformation, but it seems to have settled, for good or ill, as a nationalist-populist entity. And, not so long ago, Harris was touting unpopular and illiberal progressive ideas herself.
