Over the course of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s tenure, the line between public and private has been gradually smudged into a questionable blur. I can understand why some Canadians might support this — and the Liberals’ tendency to clamp down on Corporate Canada generally — but I don’t like it.
One of the most recent dots in this timeline can be marked in late May, when Bill S-285 was introduced by Independent (and therefore functionally Liberal) Sen. Julie Miville-Dechêne. If passed, it would require that every federally incorporated corporation operate such that it “benefits the wider society and the environment in a manner proportionate to its size and the nature of its operations” in addition to its shareholders; it would also be required to minimize the harm it causes to society and the environment, “with the objective of eliminating such harm.”
