An Indigenous transgender woman, who attempted suicide following the furor over a refused waxing service at a Windsor salon, has been awarded $35,000 in damages by the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario.
The incident took place in 2018, but the decision was just published last month.
On March 17, 2018, the unnamed applicant phoned Mad Max Windsor Inc., a waxing salon, and asked whether it provided waxing services to transgender women. The employee who answered the phone first told her “no” and then “I don’t know,” according to the applicant. The employee herself testified that she did not know what transgender meant and told the applicant that the salon’s owner would call her back.
