The Liberal government on Thursday announced a promise to make numerous items free from GST and HST for three months, from Dec. 14 to Feb. 15. They also announced a a rebate for Canadians who worked in 2023 and made less than $150,000, to the tune of $250 per person. Here’s what’s covered under the first half of that plan.

Many grocery items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, bread, canned and frozen food, meat, eggs, coffee and milk are deemed “basic” and are already tax-free. But the plan adds other food and drink items deemed less important, such as snacks and alcohol. Or as a government release puts it: “essentially all food.”
