Dozens of properties have been added to a public land bank in an effort to provide more affordable housing across the country.
The 56 properties currently on the list have the potential to be turned into thousands of housing units on “a total of 305 hectares of land across Canada,” per the federal government’s webpage.
As part of the initiative, an interactive map was made to show the available properties, which can be used as a tool for interested parties to view and to make enquiries. Some properties are labelled as open for feedback, while others are open for proposals.
The properties on the list span from Inuvik, Northwest Territories to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, and include former military bases, a former National Film Board building and former post offices.
“There are thousands of federal properties in every part of this country that aren’t doing much right now that could be made available to build more homes for Canadian families,” said Housing Minister Sean Fraser in a video on X, announcing the new initiative.
“If we’re going to solve the national housing crisis, we need to do absolutely everything that we can, and by making federal lands available to build housing for Canadian families, we’re going to be one step closer to restoring affordability in housing markets in every part of this country.”
