Last summer, record-high olive oil prices spurred a crime wave in Spain, the world’s largest producer. This year, costs have continued to climb. According to Statistics Canada, a litre of olive oil has gone from roughly $9 in January 2022 to more than $14 this January. That’s a 61 per cent increase — and extreme weather in the Mediterranean is primarily to blame.
