When Toronto designer Aman Than’s youngest daughter headed off to university, she and her husband, Johnny, decided to embark on a long-planned refresh. The updated design of their Brampton-area home proves that rooms don’t need colour to have character and interest.&nbsp;

The renovation started with the kitchen, which Aman says was basically unchanged since the house was built in the ’90s. “It had a half-wall dividing it from the family room, so the rooms were quite separate, which really chopped things up,” she recalls. “We wanted to be able to entertain and not have one person feel like they were stuck in the kitchen cooking all night.” Knocking out the wall separating the two rooms made things feel warmer and more cohesive, and added the illusion of spaciousness without increasing the actual square footage.&nbsp;
