Canadians will soon be heading to the polls in a federal election. As a former local councillor, mayor, county warden, and Police Services Board chair, I have enormous respect for anyone who puts their name on the ballot to serve their fellow Canadians.
As a second-generation community newspaper publisher from Fergus, Ontario, I have a responsibility to ensure my papers, the Wellington Advertiser and the North Wellington Community News, report fairly and accurately on two electoral contests in my community. While the national campaign will likely be about U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff threats and his threats to our national sovereignty, there are many other issues that I hope will get aired, including housing, affordability, immigration, cutting red tape, broadening our trading relationships, as well as our national defence and Arctic sovereignty.
