On Monday, the United States House of Representatives Oversight Committee subjected the director of the Secret Service, Kimberly Cheatle, to a five-hour grilling over the wounding of former president Donald Trump. How did that go? Well, as you’ve probably heard, Cheatle resigned Tuesday morning: that should save you the five hours of study.
I can’t say what I saw of the hearing reflected very well on the House any more than it did on Cheatle, who arrived with the apparent intention of defending her agency — and staying on the job to complete the follow-up of what looks like the worst Secret Service mission failure of the past century. In her prepared opening remarks to the committee, Cheatle promised “I will move heaven and Earth to ensure an incident like July 13 does not happen again.” Less than a day later, planetary rearrangement has become someone else’s duty.
