The King’s whirlwind visit to Canada, featuring some brief public walkabouts and delivering Tuesday’s damp-squib throne speech, was clearly less controversial than it would have been had President Donald Trump not retaken the White House. As a fan of constitutional monarchy, I find that rather sad. But I think’s it’s also rather instructive, and perhaps even encouraging.
