President Donald Trump is making clear to all Canadians that we are not in charge of the continent. This was always an implicit fact of living next to the American Elephant, but now, it’s being blurted out.

As a result, there has been much back and forth as to how we got into such a subservient situation. While there is more than enough blame to go around, Canada’s focus right now needs to be on what we can control, rather than recriminations or plans and guesses on what to do with Trump. Despite all his bluster, Canada still controls what’s within our borders. This is where we need to start if we are truly serious about seeing off the American threat.
