Ludwig von Mises served on the front lines of World War I. As an artillery captain in the Austro-Hungarian army, he was surrounded by gore and bloodshed, horrors that he never forgot. In recognition of his service and his brilliance, he was offered a plush position serving as an economic advisor in the war department. Ease and comfort in a time of conflict was his. All he had to do was agree to the demands of his government.
But Mises was not a man to betray his principles.
Instead, he warned about the dangers of his government’s desired policy of war socialism. As a result, he was sent into one of the war’s most dangerous fronts. Throughout his life, Mises demonstrated his willingness to sacrifice it all to stand for the truth.
Luckily, Ludwig von Mises did not meet his end in the Great War. He went on to lead the intellectual fight against the socialists of Europe and the New Dealers in America.
It is in his fighting spirit that Lew Rockwell founded the Mises Institute, and it is in his honor that we ask you for your support.
Our world is dominated by politics and intellectual fallacies. That is why it is more important than ever before to defend the ideas essential to preserving civilization.

We do this through our student programs, our popular articles, our podcasts, our animated videos for beginners, and our vast library of free ebooks.
Online and in person, we educate the public about the harms caused by the state, the political class, and their crony clients—without exception and without apology. Our mission has always been education, and it is more important than ever.
This week is our Fall Campaign, and we need your help. Donating $100 (or $9 per month) will make you a 2026 Member. Join us or renew your membership today!
Donate $5 or more this week and you’ll receive a paperback copy of the Institute’s newest book, Hayek for the 21st Century. Hayek was one of Mises’s great compatriots in the fight for a free society. The essays in this collection were selected for their enduring relevance and intellectual impact. Your support will help us distribute 100,000 copies of this book to those who have yet to hear about the true nature of the state.
We will also list you on mises.org as a Supporter!
We hope we can count on your support as we continue our battle of ideas.
