NextImg:US president Donald Trump set to speak from Oval Office - live

Donald Trump is due to make a special announcement from the Oval Office today - and speculation has run rampant over what it could be about. Trump is expected to make the announcement at the White House at about 2pm local time (7pm UK time).

The president recently faced a major setback in his bid to implement staggering tariffs on allies and other nations, after a federal court struck them down - claiming he had overstepped his authority. Trump's announcement will come amid widespread speculation online about his health after he was seen with a bruise on his hand last week.

The Republican has also threatened to send the National Guard to Democrat cities over his concerns with crime, although political figures have argued why the same has not been proposed for "red" states with higher per capita crime rates. It has also been speculated Trump could address global affairs following a joint meeting between China leader Xi Jinping, Russian President Vladimir Putin and India's Narendra Modi at a summit in Shanghai.

Major address to include 'space command announcement'

A link to a livestream of Mr Trump's upcoming presidential address has revealed that the even will be a "space command" announcement.

The link, sent out by the Defense Visual Information Distribution Service (DVIDS) ahead of 2pm ET (7pm BST) describes it as a “US Space Command HQ Announcement”.

'Department of War' to make comeback?

Trump falsely brands Chicago as 'murder capital of the world'

In a new TruthSocial post, Donald Trump falsely branded Chicago as the "murder capital of the world."

In a post shared today, Trump said: "Chicago is the murder capital of the world."

While Chicago does suffer from high homicide rates, Trump's claim is not supported by evidence.

In the US alone, Memphis, Tennessee, St Louis, Missouri, Baltimore, Maryland, Washington DC and Birmingham, Alabama, are listed as the five highest cities for homicide when taking into account population size, according to USA Facts, which looks at data in the US.

Globally, Colima, in Mexico, was listed as the murder capital in the world last year with 140.3 homicides per 100,000 people.

Announcement will be Trump's first in days

Media-hungry Trump has not made a media appearance in several days and this announcement will be the first since last week.

He was, however, spotted playing a round of golf over the weekend.

Epstein survivors to hold news conference tomorrow

The spectre of Jeffrey Epstein continues to haunt Donald Trump with survivors of Jeffrey Epstein due to hold a press conference tomorrow.

Republican Thomas Massie, who has butted heads with Trump, and Democrat Ro Khanna, will be alongside the victims as they speak at the press conference tomorrow.

Trump has been under pressure to release the Epstein files after him and his team said they would after coming into office.

So far, there has been little willingness from Trump to release a number of files connected to Epstein, much to the ire of his supporters.

'Chicago most dangerous city,' says Trump

Donald Trump branded Chicago the "worst and most dangerous city in the World," in a post shared to TruthSocial that was shared by the White House team on X/Twitter.

The claim is not supported by evidence, according to the Numbeo mid-year crime index. Pietermaritzburg in South Africa is listed as the most dangerous with a crime index of 82.8 per every 100,000 residents.

Memphis, in Republican Tennessee, is listed as the ninth-most dangerous on the list and is the first US city on the list.

Chicago is listed 41 and is below other US cities in both Democrat and Republican-run states.

It is unclear whether Chicago will be part of the announcement today.
