A major alert has been issued across popular Spanish hotspots as extreme floods have left cars submerged underwater.

Holidaymakers heading overseas have been issued with the red weather alert, that has seen busy Ibiza airport suffer with water pouring through the building and into baggage security areas.

Hotspots including the party island have been hit with the fresh warnings with alerts stating that torrential rain could cause problems including travel disruption.

Footage shows a normally busy road in Ibiza closed due to the heavy rain.

The clip shared by the local government shows the E-10 which is completely flooded. People on the island have been urged to only go out in emergencies with a red weather warning in place.

Leaks at Ibiza Airport due to the intense rainfall

Intense rain has caused leaks by the security area on the way through departures at Ibiza Airport.

More than 100 litres of water has fallen this morning in the region.

AENA, Spain’s airport authority, has stated that "due to the widespread torrential rains, a large amount of water has fallen in a short period of time , and the drains have become blocked." They also added that "work is underway in the affected areas."

But the operator said that flights have not been affected, except for some which had to be diverted when the heaviest rain fell.

Firefighters rush to save people stuck in lifts

Firefighters have rescued around fifteen people trapped in lifts, cars and properties so far, according to reports.

Sergeant José Antonio López, of the Ibiza Council Fire Service, stressed the severity of the situation.

He told IB3 Televisión that firefighters have attended about 50 flood-related issues so far.

Phones 'ping off' with warnings to stay inside

Locals have been urged to avoid 'outdoor activities' due to the severe conditions.

It comes as rain is continuing to batter parts of the country.

The mobile alerts reads: "Risk of flooding due to torrential rain. Do not approach streams, rivers, or flood prone areas and avoid low-lying areas and basements. If water enters your home move to higher floors."

A map from the Spanish weather agency shows the holiday hotspots which are worst affected by the heavy rainfall and floods.

Currently there is a yellow warning for the Alicante area, parts of Majorca, as well as red for Ibiza and Formentera.

An orange warning has been reactivated for northern part of the Alicante region this afternoon due to rainfall totalling 60 litres per square metre per hour.

It follows heavy rain from Storm Gabrielle which began yesterday and has brought floods to the eastern side of Spain, a year on from the deadly storm which hit the Valencia region.

A person living in Ibiza has shared terrifying footage of a road with fast flowing water rushing down it.

He wrote on X: "This is how it is… although it seems the intensity of the rain has decreased… we’ll see what we find when the flood level goes down."

Firefighters battling to rescue people from homes and vehicles in Ibiza

Firefighters are working to rescue people trapped in vehicles and homes, said the local authority in Ibiza.

It also said that that roads going from Sant Antoni and Santa Eulària are closed, as well as the E-10.

In case of an emergency, people are being told to call 112, while the fire service is said to be inundated with requests for help. People are urged to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and heed official warnings.

Serious warning alert this afternoon in Spain

The Spanish weather agency Aemet says that a red warning is in effect until 4pm today with a risk of possible flooding and sudden rises in river levels.

The red level has also now been issued to Ibiza and Formentera to red alert due to heavy rain. Authorities in Ibiza have also warned people to show "maximum caution" due to the weather.

Travellers have been warned to brace themselves as torrential rain hits Ibiza and Formentera today.

A warning stated: "Torrential rains in Ibiza and Formentera. More than 180 mm in twelve hours. Caution! Extraordinary danger. There may be flooding and sudden rises in waterways. The alert is in effect until 16:00 h."
