Donald Trump has made history with record-breaking low approval ratings despite his recent jibes over Volodymyr Zelensky's poll numbers.
A majority of Americans disapprove of Mr Trump just weeks into his chaotic return to the White House. Polling from Gallup taken between February 3 and 16 show 51 per cent of Americans disprove of him compared to 45 per cent who approve.
The president made history as the only US leader to have a majority who disapprove of his tenure in office just weeks after taking to the White House. But while his approval ratings are low in comparison to US presidents going back to Harry Truman, Mr Trump does enjoy more favourability than he did in his first term.
Between February 13 and 19, 2017, Mr Trump's had a 54 per cent disapproval rating and with only 40 per cent approving. Part of his poor approval ratings can, in part, be explained by his move to slap tariffs on US allies such as Mexico, Canada and the European Union.
Others are concerned that his right-hand man Elon Musk is making substantial cuts to the US government with little regard as to the impacts. But Trump's supporters have praised his quick action and use of executive orders to quickly move his administration.
Republicans are also more likely than Democrats to support his pivot away from supporting Ukraine and having a more favourable attitude toward Russia. The US President lashed out at Ukraine President Mr Zelensky, accusing him of being a dictator and for having a 4 per cent approval rating.
Mr Trump was incorrect with his claims, with Mr Zelensky's approval rating being around 63 per cent in Ukraine around the time of his comments. Elections are also suspended in Ukraine during wars as outlined in the country's constitution.
The Gallup polls give Mr Trump the lowest rating of any American president following the end of World War II. The post-war president with the highest approval rating listed by Gallup is Mr Truman shortly after he assumed the presidency with 87 per cent favouring him.
The US Congress has, unlike the president, seen its approval jump 12 points since early January to 29 per cent. This represents the highest rating since May 2021.
