NextImg:Three family members 'murdered' in horror 'attack' as armed cops race to village

Three family members have been found dead after a suspected triple murder in Co Louth, Ireland.

Gardaí were called to a house in Tallanstown this morning, where the bodies of two men and a woman were discovered. All three are believed to have suffered fatal injuries in a violent attack. A man has since been arrested and is being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, which allows detention for up to 24 hours. Sources say he is also receiving medical attention.

The scene has been sealed off, with the State Pathologist’s Office and the Garda Technical Bureau notified. The victims' bodies remain inside the property as forensic examinations continue.

Forensic tent set up

A blue-and-white forensic tent has been set up close to the property.

Gardai and a team of forensic investigators in white overalls were seen going into the property where the family were found dead.

Road closures are also in place with officers speaking to car drivers as they pull up to a road block.

Family "well-known locally"


Local councillor John Sheridan spoke to the Irish Mirror to saying that the "family is a well known", adding that they have been involved in sports and the local community.

He said: "They are a well-liked family. I would have known them through the local community and sporting events.

“The property is between three small villages in Co Louth - Stonestown, Louth Village and Tallanstown so all three communities are very distressed and very shocked.

"Word started to filter through the villages around 10am this morning when emergency services came from Dundalk.

“This is the first time something shocking like this has happened in this quiet and peaceful area.

“There is a huge degree of shock and sadness in the area.”

Victims "were stabbed"

Gardaí believe all three people were murdered.

It is understood all three victims were stabbed and sustained fatal injuries.

A post mortem examination to comfirm the cause of death will take place in due course.

It's believed the three deceased family members are a couple and one of their adult sons, according to local reports.

TD shocked by incident in 'quiet, rural area'

Sinn Féin TD (Irish member of parliament) for Louth, Ruairí Ó Murchú, says he is shocked at the deaths of three people in a "quiet and rual" area.

He said: "This is a truly shocking and appalling incident which has absolutely stunned the whole community all over County Louth. The fact that three members of one family seem to have died in dreadful and violent circumstances on a Monday morning in a quiet and rural area of Mid Louth is appalling.

"I would appeal for anyone with information to go to the gardaí immediately."

Gardaí are 'not looking for anyone else'

Ireland's Minister for Justice has said that gardaí are not seeking any more suspects following the deaths of three people - and that there's no ongoing threat to the public in Co Louth.

Jim O'Callaghan said that "there's no further information I can put into the public domain at present, but I think further information will become available in due course," RTE reports.

Area sealed off for full technical examination

The area has been cordoned off while authorities carry out a full technical examination. The Offices of the Coroner and the State Pathologist have been notified.

Units from Ardee and Drogheda Garda Stations, members of the Armed Response Unit, and the National Ambulance Service have all attended.

Councillor urges people not to speculate

Councillor for Louth and the Ardee/Mid-Louth area Pearse McGeough has urged members of the public not to speculate following this morning's horror discovery.

He wrote on X: "Very sad news coming out of Tallanstown this morning. I would ask people not to speculate until we know the facts. Our thoughts are with the friends, family and the community."

Incident is self-contained

Gardaí believe the incident is self-contained with no wider threat to the public.

They have arrested one man, aged in his 30s, who is currently being held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.

The suspected murder of three family members happened in Tallanstown - a tiny village in County Louth, Ireland, which sits along the River Glyde.

Gardaí have issued a new statement following the discovery of three bodies at a house in Tallanstown.

In a statement, they said: "Gardaí were alerted to a serious incident at a residential property in Tallanstown, Co Louth, this morning, Monday 29 September 2025. Three people - two males and one female (all adults) - were found deceased at the scene.

"The scene has been preserved for technical examination. The Offices of the Coroner and the State Pathologist have been notified. A male, aged in his 30s, has been arrested and is currently detained at a station in the Garda North West Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Investigations are ongoing. An Garda Síochána has no further information at this time."

Local councillor: 'Truly shocking' for peaceful town

Local councillor John Sheridan has described the incident as "truly shocking" - adding that the area is known to be "very peaceful" and "calm".

He said: "It's very sad. The community in that area is a nice, peaceful community, great community spirit in the area. I know the area very well. It's very sad for this news to be emerging. Obviously my thoughts are with all of those who are impacted by it, and my thoughts are with the emergency services and first responders, and my thoughts are with all family involved.

"It's obviously a very tough time for the area. It's a very peaceful, calm area and you don't expect these things in the local area. It's an area of great community spirit and it's truly, truly shocking," he added.

One man arrested and 'receiving medical attention'

A man has been arrested and he is detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act. He can be held for up to 24 hours.

Sources say he is also receiving medical attention. Gardaí said:"A male, aged in his 30s, has been arrested and is currently detained at a station in the Garda North West Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

"Investigations are ongoing. An Garda Síochána has no further information at this time."
