NextImg:Mr Whippy van slashes ice cream costs after being accused of 'taking the p***'

A Mr Whippy van accused of "daylight robbery" has been shamed into bringing down its prices after customers complained they were "taking the p***".

The ice cream vans are a staple fix of a British day out, but like almost everywhere else, they've become victim to spiralling costs. A sweet fix on a hot day in the park now can set you back as much as £7 each, with parents furious at how expensive it's become.

The rising costs even sent one little girl viral across the world after a video of her livid rant about being charged "bloody £9 for two" ice creams was watched by millions on TikTok. Now one Mr Whippy van appears to have taken on board the fury of locals as it brought down its prices to slightly wallet friendlier figures.

Wythenshawe Park's van in Greater Manchester changed its prices after one local shared its price list on Facebook, prompting heated debate about the cost of the traditional British treat. Parents were warned to "steer clear" of the van by the playground while their kids were in tow if they wanted to avoid temper tantrums.

Prices at the van started from £3.95 for a basic 99 cone, up to £5.95 for a 'Knickerbocker Sunday' and £6.95 for a 'King Cone'. The figures saw hundreds respond in indignation, slamming the seller for the 'unbelievable' prices.

"We seen so many kids the other day crying as their mum just couldn't afford it and didn't have it," one person said. "Everyone is out to make a bit of profit but this is taking the p**s."

"I understand they have a fee to pay for having that spot and need to cover that, but come on that is like festival prices and not even worth it," another added. A third said: "How are families meant to go on cheap days out with them prices. Daylight robbery!!! He should be ashamed of him/herself."

One customer complained they couldn't even see the price list when they visited the van, buying two ice creams and almost fainting when they were billed £11.25. Manchester City Council told the MEN it was "engaging with the operator" of the Royal Ices van, "addressing concerns" that had been raised.

But a visit to the van on Monday, we were told that prices have been lowered and it cost us £7 for two standard waffle cone 99s. A standard 99 has been reduced to £3.25, or £2.75 without a Flake, the Knickerbocker Sunday to £3.95 and the King Cone to £6.

A council spokesman said: "Affordability is a key strand of our assessment process for the procurement of partners. Through the contracting process we will work with operators to make sure their prices are fair and affordable for our residents."
