All the lanes have now reopened - but delays of up to an hour remain.
In a post on X, National Highways announced: "Recovery complete and all lanes now open on the #M6 southbound between J31A and J31 near #Preston.
"Delays of up to 60 minutes and approx. 5 miles of congestion remain."

In the map, traffic can be seen building up along the eastbound carriageway of the M55 ahead of the M6 southbound.
Motorists have been told to expect at least 45 minutes of delays due to the incident.
