A massive fire has been raging by a popular cinema with emergency services tackling the flames and people told to avoid the area.

Videos online show smoke billowing near the Odeon in Beckenham, south east London. Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a building fire on High Street in Beckenham.

"The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke and we are advising people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed at this time," said London Fire Brigade.

Smoke from the fire in Beckenham was seen across London and an image shows it rising above the Cutty Sark in Greenwich this morning.

London Fire Brigade said: "The Brigade received the first of 18 calls at 0759 and Control Officers have mobilised crews from Beckenham, Bromley, Woodside, Forest Hill and surrounding fire stations to the scene.

"A 32-metre turntable ladder from Forest Hill is also attending and is being used as a water tower to help extinguish the fire from above. The fire was brought under control by 1033."

Fire 'under control and no reports of injuries'

An update from London Fire Brigade said that the fire is now under control and there are no reports of injuries.

A statement read: "Ten fire engines and around 70 firefighters have been called to a building fire on High Street in Beckenham.

"The fire has been affecting the roof of a mixed-use building, currently under refurbishment, as well as the first and second floors of the building. Firefighters have worked extremely hard to prevent the fire spreading to adjoining buildings, including a cinema.

"The fire is now under control but crews will remain on scene for some time to fully extinguish the fire. There have been no reports of any injuries at this time."

Cause of the fire is not yet known

London Fire Brigade has said that it does not yet know the cause of a blaze which is ripping through a building in south east London and also causing major traffic congestion.

A 32-metre ladder is being used to tackle the flames.

Smoke has been pictured from miles around with a blaze ripping through a building by the Odeon cinema in Beckenham.

It is causing traffic congestion and the fire brigade has warned people to close their doors and windows.

High Street in Beckenham is blocked with queueing traffic between Rectory Road and Kelsey Lane.

There is congestion in the area which stretches back along Croydon Road, Beckenham Road, to Manor Road and to Rectory Road back to Beckenham Junction.

"The incident is causing major traffic disruption in Beckenham and we are asking people to avoid travelling through the area whilst the incident remains ongoing as road closures are in place," said the fire brigade.

Local councillor praises 'swift response' of firefighters

Councillor Chloe-Jane Ross, who represents Beckenham Town and Copers Cope and is Leader of the Liberal Democrat group on Bromley Council, has praised the response of firefighters.

She said: “Seeing a fire so close to the Beckenham Odeon is heartbreaking for the whole community. We are thankful to the firefighters for their swift response and sincerely hope no one has been injured.”

'Half of roof on fire while first and second floors partially alight'

Firefighters continue to battle a blaze in Beckenham where a roof is half on fire and two floors are also affected.

An update from London Fire Brigade read: "As of 0920 hrs, half of the roof of a mixed-use building, currently under refurbishment, remains alight. The second and first floors of the building are also partially alight."

Thick smoke is filling the air from a fire which has broken out at a property in Beckenham.

Firefighters are 'working hard' to stop fire spreading to the cinema

Firefighters say that the blaze is at a "mixed-use building" and they are trying to stop it from reaching the cinema.

London Fire Brigade has now said: "The roof of a mixed-use building, currently under refurbishment, is alight. Firefighters are working hard to prevent the spread of the fire to adjoining buildings, including a cinema.

"The fire is producing a significant amount of smoke and we are advising people in the area to keep their windows and doors closed at this time."

Roof of building appears to be on fire

Residents have commented on social media that it appears to be the roof of the building which is on fire.

"The roof of both the Odean & Ye Kebab are both on fire," said one person on Facebook, while another said: "It's an extension behind kebab ye that's burning."

While a further person wrote: "I hope no-one was hurt and that they're abe to rescue the Odeon . Thank God the fire station's a stone's throw from the scene."

The fire is burning through what appears to be the Odeon cinema on High Street, Bromley.

It has left the following London buses on diversion: 54, 227, 352, 354, and 367.
