NextImg:Donald Trump says Prince William doing 'fantastic job' during private chat

US President-elect Donald Trump has described Prince William as "a good man" doing a "fantastic job" at a private meeting at the British ambassador’s residence in Paris this evening.

Trump arrived at 9.40pm French time (8.40pm UK time) to meet the Prince of Wales, who shook hands on arrival. Prince William, 42, said "very good to see you," to which Trump, 78, replied: "Nice to see you, woah, what a nice group (looking at the press). He’s a big man, this one (looking at Prince William)."

The Prince asked Trump if he had "warmed up" after the ceremony, to which he responded: "I haven’t warmed up yet [but] I had a good time, it was a beautiful ceremony."

Trump and William shook hands on arrival

Pointing at William, Trump said again: "He’s doing a fantastic job, thank you." They then walked upstairs to the ‘salon jaune’, the name reflecting the yellow decor in the room, for a 30-minute private meeting.

Journalists were allowed to see the first 25 seconds, where they smiled for the cameras as Prince William said to Trump: "Warm the toes up after the cathedral." Trump laughed and responded: "Right". Today was the first time Trump has met a member of the royal family since he won the US election in November.

Prince William last met Trump during his state visit to the UK in 2019. Prince William was originally meant to meet Trump earlier in the afternoon for half an hour, followed by a second meeting with the First Lady Jill Biden and her daughter Ashley, 43.

The pair smiled for the cameras ahead of their private meeting

But the meeting with Trump was rescheduled until after the ceremony because Prince William was delayed arriving due to Storm Darragh. The pair were pictured greeting each other inside the cathedral, with Trump patting William on the shoulder before the two shook hands and spoke for a few seconds.

It was the first time Trump has met a member of the royal family since he won the US election in November. The private chat with the First Lady was cancelled and instead they spoke when she arrived at Notre Dame.

A Kensington Palace spokesman said: "This evening, The Prince of Wales held a meeting with President Trump at the UK Ambassador’s Residence in Paris.

"The warm, friendly meeting lasted around 40 minutes. The pair discussed a range of global issues but focussed on the importance of the UK/US special relationship. President Trump also shared some warm and fond memories with The Prince about the Late Queen for which HRH was extremely grateful."
