NextImg: Donald Trump officially elected in bruising defeat for Democrats - live updates

Donald Trump has officially won the 2024 US Election and will be the next President of the United States.

The Republican nominee spoke to jubilant supporters in Florida this morning as he edges increasingly closer to shock return to the White House. Trump supporters started to grow in confidence early in the night as the Republican nominee extended his margin of victory in a number of key states, such as Florida.

He later clinched the important swing states of North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Georgia. The famously-accurate pollster Ann Selzer, who generated much media speculation with an outlier poll for Kamala Harris in Iowa, appears to have been wrong by a significant degree.

And Brits can now brace themselves for a "nightmare" four years as chaos undoubtedly reigns across the pond.

No info on whether Vladimir Putin will congratulate Trump, Kremlin says

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said he had no information on whether Russian President Vladimir Putin plans to congratulate Donald Trump but emphasised that Moscow views the US as an “unfriendly” country.

Peskov reaffirmed the Kremlin’s claim that the U.S. support for Ukraine amounted to its involvement in the conflict, telling reporters: “Let’s not forget that we are talking about the unfriendly country that is both directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state.”

Asked if Putin’s failure to congratulate Trump could hurt ties, Peskov responded that the Russia-U.S. relations already are at the “lowest point in history,” adding that it will be up to the new U.S. leadership to change the situation. He noted Putin’s statements about Moscow’s readiness for a “constructive dialogue based on justice, equality and readiness to take mutual concerns into account.”

Peskov noted Trump’s campaign statements about his intention to end wars, saying that “those were important statements, but now after the victory, while getting ready to enter the Oval Office or entering the Oval Office, statements could sometimes change.”

'Prepare for nightmare crash as Donald Trump will be nastier and more vengeful'

'Here we go again but this Donald Trump roller-coaster ride will be much worse so buckle up and brace for a nightmare crash.

The madman branded a Fascist by those who worked for him first time will be a bigger, more potent menace second time. He’s nastier, vengeful and surrounded by Hard Right ideological hawks straining to unleash on America and the world their destructive hardline politics and economics.

Trade wars, tax gifts for multibillionaire Elon Musk and an assault on decency and public services from the convicted felon will gravely test US institutions. Spare a thought for Ukraine and Volodymyr Zelensky, Vladimir Putin doing fist bumps in the Kremlin when his soul mate is back in the White House.'

The Republican won the 270 votes needed to secure his path to the White House, picking up battleground states such as Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia. He called victory in a speech to jubilant supporters in Florida, saying he had been given "an unprecedented and powerful mandate" by the American people.

There's still counting going on in a handful of states. But in reality - it's over and Mr Trump will return to the White House as 47th President of the United States.

Just Stop Oil splatter US embassy with orange paint as Donald Trump declares victory

Protesters from Just Stop Oil have painted the US embassy in London in response to Donald Trump's election victory this morning.

A Just Stop Oil spokesperson said: "The only real winner of today's election is the corporate power that controls the major parties in both the US and UK. Regardless of who sits in the White House, corporations and billionaires will ensure that the interests of the fossil fuel industry will continue to be prioritised over the wellbeing of ordinary people."

Trump uses victory speech to make weird brag about Melania

Donald Trump used his victory speech in the US election to make a bizarre brag about his wife, Melania Trump.

The former and now incoming president told supporters at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida that he has won the race against Democrat Kamala Harris without having crossed the 270 electoral vote threshold required to retake the Oval Office. He is just three votes short, however, and is essentially guaranteed to surge to victory with a Republican tsunami in the House of Representatives and Senate.

He announced that the US "has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate", adding: "Nobody expected that. Nobody. Thank you very much for that and you have some great senators and great new senators and it also looks like we’ll be keeping control of the House of Representatives." During that landmark speech, he also awarded his wife an unusual accolade.

'Londoners will be anxious about outcome of US election' - Sadiq Khan

London mayor Sadiq Khan has issued a statement on the US election.

“I know that many Londoners will be anxious about the outcome of the US Presidential election. Many will be fearful about what it will mean for democracy and for women’s rights, or how the result impacts the situation in the Middle East or the fate of Ukraine. Others will be worried about the future of NATO or tackling the climate crisis.

"London is - and will always be - for everyone. We will always be pro-women, pro-diversity, pro-climate and pro-human rights. London is a place where we’re proud of our diversity, proud of the contribution of all our communities and proud of our spirit of unity.

"These are some of the values that will continue to bind us together as Londoners. The lesson of today is that progress is not inevitable. But asserting our progressive values is more important than ever - re-committing to building a world where racism and hatred is rejected, the fundamental rights of women and girls are upheld, and where we continue to tackle the crisis of climate change head on."

European Commission president says she’s looking forward to working with Trump

The European Union’s top official says she’s looking forward to working with Trump again as the former president is on the cusp of victory in the US presidential race.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that the EU and US “are more than just allies. We are bound by a true partnership between our people, uniting 800 million citizens.”

“Let us work together on a transatlantic partnership that continues to deliver for our citizens. Millions of jobs and billions in trade and investment on each side of the Atlantic depend on the dynamism and stability of our economic relationship,” she said in a statement.

Iran's currency falls to all-time low after Trump election victory

Iran's currency, the rial, has fallen to an all-time low as former president Donald Trump looks set to return to the White House.

The rial traded at 703,000 rials to the dollar. In 2015, at the time of Iran's nuclear deal with world powers, it was at 32,000 to one dollar.

On July 30, the day that Iran's reformist President Masoud Pezeshkian was sworn in and started his term, the rate was 584,000 to one dollar.

Mr Trump unilaterally withdrew America from the accord in 2018, sparking years of tensions between the countries that persist today.

The slide comes as Iran's economy has struggled for years under crippling international sanctions over its rapidly advancing nuclear programme, which now enriches uranium at near weapons-grade levels.

Mr Pezeshkian, elected after a helicopter crash killed hard-line President Ebrahim Raisi in May, came to power on a promise to reach a deal to ease Western sanctions.

However, Iran's government has for weeks been trying to downplay the effect on Tehran of whoever won Tuesday's election in the United States. That stance continued on Wednesday with a brief comment from Fatemeh Mohajerani, a spokeswoman for Mr Pezeshkian's administration.

"The election of the US president doesn't have anything specifically to do with us," she said. "The major policies of America and the Islamic Republic are fixed, and they won't heavily change by people replacing others. We have already made necessary preparations in advance."

But tensions remain high between the nations, 45 years after the 1979 US Embassy takeover and 444-day hostage crisis that followed.

Iran remains locked in the Middle East wars affecting the region, with its allies battered including militant groups and fighters of its self-described "Axis of Resistance" such as Hamas, Lebanon's Hezbollah and Yemen's Houthi rebels.

Israel is pressing on with its war in the Gaza Strip targeting Hamas and its invasion of Lebanon amid devastating attacks against Hezbollah.

At the same time, Iran still appears to be assessing damage from Israel's strikes on the Islamic Republic on October 26 in response to two Iranian ballistic missile attacks.

Iran has threatened to retaliate against Israel - where US troops now man a missile defence battery.

What is Project 2025? Inside Trump's 'dangerous blueprint for presidency'

As Donald Trump looks set to become the next president of the United States his opponents are worried another Trump Presidency might bring extreme policies and even - in the words of one of the architects of Project 2025, “a second American Revolution”.

Project 2025 is a roadmap for what Donald Trump should do if he wins power. It was written in 2022 by conservative-leaning think tank called the Heritage Foundation along with 140 former Trump staffers and allies.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) have called Project 2025 “a roadmap for how to replace the rule of law with right-wing ideals” and slammed “ its perilous implications for our civil rights and liberties”.

One of the key things the ambitious 922-page plan proposes is a significant increase in presidential authority and proposes the dismissal of up to 50,000 civil servants to be replaced by those loyal to Trump.
