NextImg:Did the Liz Truss lettuce banner prank go too far - vote in our poll

Liz Truss stormed off stage after jokers unveiled a brutal lettuce banner at her book promotion event on Tuesday - but do YOU think the campaign group went too far?

The former PM was voicing her support for Donald Trump during the event in Suffolk when the banner, illustrated with the vegetable and the words "I crashed the economy", unfurled behind her. A video of the incident showed Ms Truss saying: "I support Trump and I want him to win... But the, it’s what I was saying about incumbents, I think the average American is not doing well."

Oblivious to the banner behind her, the former MP for South West Norfolk continued: "I think it was Bill Clinton’s adviser who said ‘it’s the economy stupid’, so I think that he will probably win." When the banner was eventually pointed out to Ms Truss, she fumed "that's not funny" before gathering her papers and exiting the stage.

Political campaign group Led by Donkeys have taken responsibility for the move, who shared the video on social media with the caption: "Liz Truss is on a pro-Trump speaking tour. So we dropped a strategically-positioned remote-controlled lettuce banner. She didn’t find it funny."

The joke poked fun at the iconic Daily Star stunt in October 2022, when the newspaper livestreamed a lettuce dressed as Ms Truss to see whether it lasted longer than she did in No10. Ms Truss resigned after just 49-days, meaning the vegetable won the battle of survival.

She had previously described the lettuce debacle as "puerile" and claimed the media didn't understand her ideas. It comes after Ms Truss's government crashed the economy after announcing a disastrous mini-Budget filled with unfunded tax cuts.

The move has received mixed responses from X users, as one person penned: "This is the best thing I’ve seen all year", while another disagreed: "I am appalled by the lack of class that the @ByDonkeys have." We want to know if YOU think the prank went too far, so vote in our poll HERE to have your say.
