NextImg:Coronation Street star departs show in sad scenes 10 years after soap debut

A much-loved Coronation Street character star has bid farewell to the Weatherfield after a decade on the show, following an intense and emotional storyline.

In tonight’s episode, Bethany Platt, played by Lucy Fallon, left Manchester behind to start a new chapter in London after a turbulent year. Determined to leave on her own terms, she asked her mother, Sarah Platt, played by Tina O’Brien, to deliver a note to her ex, Daniel Osbourne.

The emotional scene saw Daniel, a teacher, rushing to Bethany’s flat in a desperate attempt to speak with her, only to be misled and told she had already gone. His heartbreak deepened when Sarah handed him a thank-you card from Bethany, which read: "Dear Daniel, thank you for showing me your true colours. From Bethany."

Actress Lucy Fallon who plays Bethany has assured fans her departure isn't permanent

After returning to the cobbles last year, Bethany quickly rekindled her romance with Daniel, played by Rob Mallard, and over the past twelve months has been through no end of drama in the community while pursuing a career in journalism.

With her former abuser, Nathan Curtis, released from prison, and her life turned upside down after plastic surgery in Turkey went wrong and left her with a permanent stoma bag, things appeared to be on the up when Daniel proposed on Christmas Day.

However, nothing is ever smooth sailing in Weatherfield and Daniel's his ex-fiancée, Daisy Midgeley, played by Charlotte Jordan, was still very much in the picture. It soon became clear that Daisy had just discovered she was pregnant and given her and Daniel’s one-night stand weeks earlier, there was a strong chance he could be the father.

The revelation was too much for Bethany to handle and she decided to leave for London on her own.

Her departure, however, is not permanent. Actress Lucy Fallon is currently on maternity leave after welcoming her second child, daughter Nancy Margaret, with footballer partner Ryan Ledson. She previously reassured fans on Instagram that she’d return to filming after so viewers can expect to see her back on-screen before long.

Lucy is the first of several Coronation Street cast members set to exit this year, with Sue Cleaver, Charlotte Jordan, Paddy Bever, and Shelley King all confirming their departures.
