Labour's deputy leadership contest has kicked off with several names confirmed to be in the running.

Keir Starmer faces the prospect of weeks of manoeuvring to fill Angela Rayner's role as the race to replace her is set to stretch past the Labour Party conference and into October.

Bell Ribeiro-Addy became the first person to officially throw her hat in the ring on Monday evening with an announcement on X. She added: "I look forward to explaining why, over the three short and undemocratic days we have to do so."

Lucy Powell announces

The former leader of the Commons Lucy Powell also announced her candidacy, saying the party's policies must be "rooted in progressive Labour values".

She said: "Living with my family in my home city, Manchester, has rooted my politics in an understanding of people’s everyday hopes and fears. These are the experiences our MPs and party members hear too. As our Deputy Leader, I would ensure these are at the heart of what we do and how we operate, bringing together all parts of the party and uniting our broad voter coalition.

More announcements expected

Manchester Central MP Lucy Powell, who was sacked as leader of the Commons on last Friday, is also said to be considering a run for the deputy leadership, as is Liverpool Wavertree MP Paula Barker.

Nominations for the deputy leadership opened on Tuesday and candidates have until 5pm on Thursday to secure the backing of 80 MPs in order to reach the next round of the contest.

Politics of grievance

The PM also used cabinet to hit out at Nigel Farage.

He told his top team: "It is important that we are very clear about what we’re up against.

“We’re up against those that feed off the politics of grievance, those that do not want problems to be fixed, because if the problems are fixed, their reason to exist, their politics, ceases to have any role in our society.”

Emily Thornberry joins the fray

Emily Thornberry has joined the race to be deputy leader, announcing plans to run on X.

She said: "I'm running for Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. We fought hard for a Labour government. But we've made mistakes and must listen. Welfare. Gaza. Wealth tax. Changes to come on SEND. I will be a voice for the membership, unions, PLP, and our constituents - not just nod along."

Andy Burnham wants "mainstream" deputy

The Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has called for whoever becomes Labour’s deputy leader to "root themselves in the mainstream of the party".

He said: "I think it helps because for all the reasons I was just saying, I spent 16 years down here and I felt I was banging my head against a brick wall at times because the default position is to think that the north can have second class infrastructure or second class services. That's what needs to be challenged. We've not seen that shift and I've said that things still feel too London-centric to me. So I want a deputy leader who will be an authentic voice to challenge that, an independent voice to challenge that, but also will raise questions about the running of the Labour Party."

Bridget backing

Appearing on LBC, Wes Streeting appeared to all but endorse Bridget Phillipson.

He said: "I would certainly be very favourable towards Bridget. I've known Bridget a long time, I think she is a fantastic Education Secretary, a good colleague, good friend & a great deputy leader if chosen"

Wes Streeting favours a woman for deputy leader

Wes Streeting has said he would prefer the next deputy leader be a woman.

He said: "I would certainly prefer the next deputy leader to be a woman."

Appearing on Times Radio, the Health Secretary was also asked if Angela Rayner's replacement should be a "northern woman".

He said: "I think without being disrespectful to some brilliant women in London who are standing like Emily Thornberry, I've got a lot of respect for, I can well understand why lots of my colleagues are saying we should have a deputy leader from outside London to broaden perspectives, broaden the base."

Bell Ribeiro-Addy standing

Bell Ribeiro-Addy also confirmed she was running, while also criticisisng the party for rushing the contest.

She said: "I am putting myself forward to stand as Deputy Leader of the Labour Party. I look forward to explaining why, over the three short and undemocratic days we have to do so."

Bridget Phillipson announces

Bridget Phillipson today announced her candidacy in the Labour Deputy Leadership contest, promising to unite the party, deliver for working people and take the fight to Reform.

In a statement, the Women and Equalites Minister Said said: “Because make no mistake: we are in a fight. We all know the dangers Reform poses our country.

“But not only am I ready for it: I’ve proven we can do it. I’ve shown we can beat Farage in the north-east, while staying true to the Labour Party’s values of equality, fairness and social justice.

“With me as Deputy Leader we will beat them right across the country and unite to deliver the opportunity that working people across this great country deserve.”
