The brand new BBC series Virdee had viewers spinning, with many feeling queasy over its "nauseating" camera techniques.

The crime drama takes inspiration from AA Dhand's novels and stars Staz Nair as the dogged detective Harry Virdee, who navigates both crime-ridden Bradford and his complex personal life.

From the get-go, viewers witness the cop darting after a suspect through downtrodden alleys, much to the shock of watching locals. A wild chase through a train station culminates in them taking death-defying leaps across the tracks, narrowly dodging an oncoming train.

Though the opening promised Hollywood-esque thrills, it’s the wobbly camera work that's left some fans feeling green around the gills.

BBC viewers shared their complaints online

Racing to social media platform X, disgruntled viewers aired their grievances. One posted: "What's with the dodgy camera angles on #Virdee it's making me want to vom..." Another shared the sentiment, commenting: "Lost me with the nauseating camera work."

A third viewer didn't mince their words: "Bye #Virdee Dreadful, head up their own backside, camera work," and another quipped, "Has this been filmed on an iPhone," reports Leeds Live.

As Virdee grapples with being shunned by his own kin for marrying against their wishes, he's drawn deep into the plight of locating a teenager caught in the web of a county lines drug operation. A desperate appeal from the lad's mum propels the detective towards a perilous edge, risking all to reunite the troubled youth with his family.

As the plot of the show unfolded, some viewers couldn't help but notice a few hitches. They pointed out issues such as difficulty in hearing the characters and storylines that failed to captivate their attention.

One viewer was candid: "Not holding my attention, I'm afraid. Too much backstory dumping and uninspired, clichéd dialogue. And another county lines plot."

Another echoed these sentiments with a touch of jest: "Bit of a mumble fest this. Like The Walking Dead. Is it the new trend to have to have the sound up full to hear what they're saying?"

Despite these early gripes, there were those who found the fresh take quite engaging. An enthusiastic viewer appreciated the change of pace, writing: "Good to have something different rather than the same old detective stories. Enjoying #Virdee!"

In a similar vein, fans rallied behind the programme with comments such as: "Loved the first episode of @BBCOne Monday night drama #Virdee Flipping brilliant," expressed by another delighted fan.

Virdee airs Mondays at 9pm on BBC One
