It seems everyone in the Biden administration has a tale to tell. Still, the strangest twist of all came yesterday (June 4) when former White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre’s publisher announced that President Joe Biden’s most vociferous defender dumped the Democratic Party. In fact, her new book is titled Independent: A Look Inside a Broken White House, Outside the Party Lines. Even more telling is that Karine Jean-Pierre is the epitome of the demographic Democrats are seeking to attract.
That apparently wasn’t demoralizing enough, and in 2008, Jean-Pierre joined forces with Barack Obama as a political consultant. Other stops along the road to serfdom in the Biden administration included MoveOn.org and serving as the deputy campaign manager for Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley. But she didn’t end there, rising to chief of staff for vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris during the 2020 campaign.
As soon as the election was called for Biden, Jean-Pierre was kicked upstairs to become the White House principal deputy press secretary, when the press office was led by Jen Psaki. Then, it was only a skip and a jump to being named White House press secretary when Psaki left for greener pastures. This final appointment made her the first openly gay – as well as the first black – individual to lead the James S. Brady White House Press Briefing Room.
Her first time at the podium was painful to watch as she shakily read notes from the press briefing book. However, the leftist press unsurprisingly gave her a pass. Still, to other non-partisan politicos, the new presidential mouthpiece became the epitome of the Peter Principle, defined as “reaching a position where they are no longer competent.” She was so well-known for reading the answers to reporters’ questions rather than handling them in an ad-lib format, a leading anonymous insider quoted by the New York Post averred, “She doesn’t have a grasp of the issues and doesn’t spend the time to learn.”
So what happened that would sour the Democratic operative on staying with those who had brought her to the forefront of the party? According to an Instagram video, the 50-year-old pitched out the following in a vague reference to her leaving the party: “I think we need to stop thinking in boxes and think outside of our boxes and not be so partisan.”
While tell-all books are the norm for those who worked in presidential administrations and witnessed the machinations of the inner sanctum, they rarely come from a White House press secretary.
In non-Democratic Party circles, Karine Jean-Pierre was best known for her unwavering and strident defense of Biden’s cognitive capabilities. She repeatedly claimed the president was “sharp as ever.”
“Everyone thinks this is a grift,” a former official told The Hill, adding that “several former colleagues expressed confusion at how Jean-Pierre seemingly intends to paint Biden as a victim while pinning her own decision to leave the party on his ‘broken’ White House.” And they added that Jean-Pierre’s book is nothing more than “an opportunistic grift.”
Whatever Karine Jean-Pierre’s motives are for writing such a controversial book, even to the point of splashing the word “independent” on the cover, it can be considered nothing less than a direct punch in the gut for the Democratic Party. After all, if the Dems can’t even hold on to their progressives, to whom will they turn next? At this point, the cupboard seems bare of believers.
