That she has been involved directly with Putin and high-level Russian officials over the topic of returning children to their parents since August came as a shock to many.
For the past three years, ongoing hostilities between Russia and Ukraine have resulted in substantial suffering by innocent children. The number of minors affected by the conflict ranges from 3 to 7 million. Such a wide range of signals that authorities do not really know how many young lives have been devastated by the war. In her brief announcement, Mrs. Trump disclosed that reuniting families is an “important initiative” for her. She went on to say:
“My ongoing mission is twofold: to optimize a transparent free flow exchange of health-related information surrounding all children who have fallen victim to this war and to facilitate the regular communication of children with their families until each individual returns home.”
The first lady also revealed that Russia “has agreed to rejoin the individuals who have turned 18” during the conflict between the two countries. However, this is just the beginning of an effort to reunify families and is expected to take time and coordination. Mrs. Trump ended her brief speech by saying, “I hope peace will come soon; it can begin with our children.”
