New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan is expected at any time to determine the fate of President-elect Donald Trump’s sentencing in what has become commonly known as the “hush money” trial. Merchan was previously set to decide whether to dismiss the case but delayed that decision.
Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg had been given a deadline of Nov. 19 to submit his recommendation for how the case should proceed. On November 12, Judge Merchan granted a stay on all deadlines associated with Trump’s conviction. Prosecutors were given time to submit their “view of appropriate steps going forward.”
Bragg responded to the deadline by filing a motion requesting “deferral of all remaining criminal proceedings until after the end of Defendant’s upcoming presidential term.” Trump will leave office in January of 2029.
Trump was found guilty on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records and concealing a payment to a porn star in exchange for her remaining silent about an alleged affair with the incoming president.
