On Wednesday, Jan. 15, negotiators reportedly reached an agreement to enact a ceasefire that could mark the end of 15 months of fighting between Israel and the Hamas terror group.

The deal, which has not yet been officially approved, was part of efforts by Qatar and other regional powers. Early reports suggest that it includes a return of hostages in exchange for a halt to the war and the release of Palestinians who were arrested by the Israeli government.

While other ceasefire agreements have been reached in this conflict, they have been swiftly broken. The input of regional partners, and the positive boon the return of hostages would bring to Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, however, suggest that this latest iteration may have more staying power.
