Our world long ago abandoned the Gaza Strip's population, over two million women, men and children. It abandoned them throughout more than 15 months of atrocious conflict, during which around 100 people were killed every day, on average. Today's figure of over 47,000 dead does not include the tens of thousands of bodies that are believed to be buried under the rubble, or the indirect victims, who died from a disease, appalling survival conditions and a lack of access to medical care.
The most vulnerable were those who were displaced, often repeatedly forced to leave everything behind, with over a million of them having been crammed into a "humanitarian zone" measuring a few dozen square kilometers, laid out by Israel on the Al-Mawasi coastline. Yet even this so-called "humanitarian" zone was not spared by Israeli bombings, with almost 100 strikes having killed at least 550 people over eight months.
