Jess Berthelsen has headed the National Confederation of Trade Unions of Greenland (SIK) for 34 years. With his almost unshakeable joviality, this 66-year-old man with brown hair and dark glasses may soon have to relinquish his post. Berthelsen has decided to run in the parliamentary elections on Tuesday, March 11, as a member of the Siumut (social democratic) party. "When Trump's idiot son came to Greenland at the beginning of January, I saw that some people in my party were seduced by the Americans, which worried me a lot," said Berthelsen.
The trade unionist is not the only one to have thrown his hat into the ring in reaction to the comments of the American leader, who has been repeating, since December 23, 2024, that he wants to "take over" Greenland. Naaja Nathanielsen, 49, has been a member of parliament since 2009 and minister since 2021, responsible for the economy, trade and mineral resources. Nathanielsen, a member of the socialist party Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA), which has governed with Siumut since 2022, had decided not to run again. She has now changed her mind. "Because of Trump," she said.
